The author of this short story really emphasized that every little detail counts. She discussed how important the little things are in writing, including her personal decision that she had to make about whether to put a comma or a dash in one of her pieces, a simple decision that she felt had a big impact. Along with simple word choice, she contined to talk about the idea of "show, dont tell." This is a very important concept that many writers leave out. By showing your writer, rather than preaching, it makes the piece a lot more exciting and worth reading. Description of every kind is one of the most important things an author must include.
The paragraphs about the students I believe really outlines the idea of individuality. Every individual has a voice and that opinion matters. Obviously, as everyone has noticed throughout their life, people all have a different point of view and expression of these are key.

I totally agree on what the author or the Dark Art of Description was main-lining in her story. Come to think of it, your response is nearly identical to mine. Anyway, the little things mean everything, whether it be by how one goes throughout their day or in whatever they do. Writing is no exception, as the words one chooses can either "make or break" them. Showing the reader tends to put them more into the story, and thus keeps them more interested. In relation to students and the idea of individuality, I couldn't agree with you more. Everyone needs to think for themselves when it comes to writing papers and whatnot. Every individual does count in society, even though at times they might not believe so. Taylor, have a fun break, and see you back in SP next week.
ReplyDeleteNo one in my group responded to the prompt so I am responding to yours. You make the perfect connection with the show don't tell. Sometimes in my writing I forget to use the description that I need to make my writing truly good. I never really thought that the last part of the story could be about individuality but this definitely could be the case. In my opinion the last part of the story the author was trying to say that you can make anything no matter how boring, sound exciting.
